Following Chris : Episode 20

Chris went back to the spot where he had been sitting and waited for them to finish up and it took quite a while before Lola came back out into the lit area giggling and adjusting her skirt with the guy in tow. Walking over to his car, they hugged and said their goodbyes and she waved to him as he drove away. She started towards the entrance of the hall, when Chris stood up and she was startled as she saw him.

“Hey baby”, she said as soon as she saw him walking toward her, recovering from her disconcertion albeit a little slowly.

“Hey” Chris said.

“How long have you been out here?” she asked.

“I just came down now. Your roomie told me you just stepped out when I went up there to find you.”

“Oh sorry”, I went to pick up some supplies, she said holding up the bag of groceries.

“Oh I see. I see the grocery store also sells kisses and body groping too.”

With her face flushed, she asked “What do you mean?”

Chris laughed and said “Don’t worry about what I mean. We’re done.”

“Chris it’s not what it looks like. Please. I’m sorry”, Lola said.

“It’s not what it looks like? Do you know I followed you in there?” Chris said, pointing in the general direction of the make-out zone.

As soon as Chris said he followed them in there, Lola’s face fell and then she said “Chris, I’m so sorry. Please.”

“Answer this question, though. How long have you been seeing that guy?” Chris asked.

“Please it doesn’t matter. I love you Chris.”

“From what I saw, you love him too. So, how long?”

“It doesn’t matter Chris. It means nothing”

“Wow. That long huh?” Chris said and chuckled.

“I didn’t say it was long”

“Lola, you know what’s funny? You can be talking like that about me to that guy and I wouldn’t matter as well. Just as easily. How many others are there?”

“Chris, it’s you I love. Please forgive me.”

“You brought the party I threw in your honour to an end, disgraced a friend of yours and myself in the process because I slept with the said friend but you had been doing the exact same thing behind my back. That has got to be the funniest thing I have ever experienced. All the money and everything else gone. I didn’t give it too much though then because I thought I deserved it.”

“Baby please. I love you.”

“I’m sorry, but I wish that were enough. We are done”, Chris said.

Walking over to his car, he got in and started driving in the general direction of his apartment. Getting to his apartment, he pulled out his phone and placed a call.

“Hello”, Chris said when the person at the other end picked up.

“Hello”, the person at the other end replied.

“What’s up?”

“I’m good”

“Have you settled in?”

“Yeah. Pretty much.”

“Okay. Great. I have a question to ask you.”

“Go ahead”

“How long have you known Lola was cheating on me?”

“Chris, please don’t put me in the middle of this.”

“Just answer. How long have you known?”

Sighing, the person on the other end answered “a little over a year”

“Wow! More than a year? And you never thought it right to let me know?”

“Like I said, I don’t want to be in the middle of this.”

“Why didn’t you say anything when she was calling you out, Camille?”

“Because I’d rather leave sleeping dogs lying. I didn’t have the strength for anything. I told her in a moment of weakness. You are her boyfriend. Not some random person. She had every right to be mad”

“Not anymore.” Chris said.

“What’s not anymore?”

“I’m no longer her boyfriend”

“Wow. Since when?”

“Since earlier this evening when I saw her other boyfriend groping her and practically having sex with her outdoors”

“Wow”

“Yes. Wow.”

“What are you gonna do?”

“What’s there to do? There’s no point crying over spilled milk. Does it hurt? Of course. But that’s where it ends.”

“Okay oh. I’m just happy she knows you found out when you saw both of them kissing. Or else, she would have just naturally assumed I told you.”

“Why would she think that?”

“Weren’t you at the party? Have you quickly forgotten all the insults she hurled at me? She would’ve thought I was trying to get even.”

“Oh yeah. But whatever. Let her go and meet her boyfriend. I’d talk to you later.”

“Okay. Good night.”

“Good night.”

Placing the phone on his dresser, he went to the kitchen to make himself a bowl of cereal to eat. He was reaching for the milk when he heard his phone ring. Walking to his room and then to the dresser, he looked at the caller ID. It was Lola.

Picking up the phone, he said, “hello”

“I’m sorry Chris.”

“See, I’m not mad or anything. That’s what you want to do, so do it.”

“I love you Chris. I will end things with him.”

“End things with him, don’t end things with him, I don’t care. Good night Lola.”

“I’m so sorr—” Lola was saying as he ended the call.

She called again but he ignored it. She kept calling and he kept ignoring and so the dance began and continued for the following couple of days.

As the days passed and the day for the wedding Yemisi had invited him for was on the morrow, Yemisi asked if she could come stay at his so that they could go for the wedding together instead of him picking her up and wasting time especially as she knew that Chris and his girlfriend had broken up. Chris agreed and then she came over with more bags than required for even a month’s stay talk more of an overnight one. That was when she explained that she would be heading back on Monday and it made more sense to bring her things so she could leave for the airport from his apartment and at the same time, spend all of her remaining time around with him.

They had sex that night and in the morning they set off for the wedding. The wedding was a high school reunion of sorts and almost everybody at the wedding party said they were adorable and could not believe that they were still together and they got tired of telling people that they were not a couple and just resulted to smiling and nodding instead.

Leaving the wedding party and getting into his car, they both had a good time laughing and they both wished she wouldn’t be gone in two days. They spent the next day and half making love, talking and discussing whether they’d both survive a long distance relationship until he came over for his masters or waiting altogether until he came over. They decided on waiting until he came over and when the time came, he drove her to the airport and bade her farewell.

In the days leading up to the wedding, Lola kept calling and begging for him to take her back and when he ran into her at school, it was more of the same. But he remained resolute and unyielding. He was no longer interested. He talked to TY too on a fairly regular basis and all she wanted was the scoop and he made promises to bare all the next time he saw her.
