As the bad news hits Bass, they arrive at their destination only to find some guys going at it, one lady with two guys. It's time for the tough discussion about the assault

I was having that numb feeling once again but this time I was not scared or worried. A part of me knew I was going to do something at the end of today that was going to leave a scar on my life. And yet that did not bother me in any way.

“So wetin we go do exactly? You don talk say make we no kill them” Obinna dug into my thoughts.

“They can lose a leg or an arm” I said without much thought. It just flowed out.

“You dey reason gan o” Scarface spoke.

“I no get anything to reason with them again. She don die and nothing wey I fit do to them wey fit bring her back. But I want something that for the rest of their life, dem go dey remember”.

“I feel you” Scarface nodded. I looked at Wole, the look in his eyes told me he was all but dead already. I felt nothing for him, nothing at all.

To be honest, Obinna could kill him and I would not be bothered but I did not want him or his brother to go out on a clean slate. I wanted them to suffer.

“Oya na, why we dey dull sef? E be like say one hacker dey room. Make I go get am”. One of the guys that had been fucking said. He did not even wait for anything else before heading off to get whatever it was that he called a hacker. I wanted to see what it was, I had an idea but I just wanted to be sure.

So I wasn’t so surprised when he came back with an axe.

“Correct, this one go fit do the job” Obinna nodded as he collected the axe from him and looked it over. It was a large one with a fairly blunt edge but I knew it could cut through flesh and bone if used well enough.

Well the more hits, the more the pain, the happier I would be.

Would I really be happy? I asked myself. I knew the answer but the answer was not what I needed. What I need was to make the two bastards feel a little of what Eva must have felt. I felt out of time.

“So which one make we even start with sef?” Scarface was with the axe now and the way he was holding it, you would know this was not his first rodeo.

“Any one you like” I couldn’t care less.

Jide was sitting up now, his face all covered in blood. Not sure he had heard all we had said or knew what was coming for him. Obinna went to sit by one of the windows and from nowhere brought out a joint.

I knew I needed to smoke too so I walked up to him and sat by his side. He nodded at me and proceeded to light it up. He took a drag and passed it to me. I puffed as much as I could and passed it back, we watched as one of the fuckers grabbed Jide by the foot and dragged him closer to his brother. Just then my phone beeped and I reached for it.

Forgotten I even had a phone. It was a text from Lauren. Fuck! Another thing I had forgotten about. Our date later tonight. She wanted to confirm where and when she was meeting me. I thought it through before replying.

The mall, 8pm. After all the shit that had happened today and was still about to go down. Good company and probably great sex was just what I needed. After replying her, I switched off my phone.

No one else was going to intrude.

I got the joint again and dragged some more on it. And that was when it hit me, I could not watch a human being been hacked apart like a piece of meat. I could not but then this was my operation, I could not chicken out.

I closed my eyes and let the weed get to me. I thought of Eva and how I would never get to see her again or see her smile. That stupid mischievous smile that often got us in trouble. Then I had the thought that pushed me over the edge, I never got to fuck Eva and I would never get to.

Selfish though? Perhaps but it pushed me to a place I could not return from, I passed the joint back to Obinna and marched to Scarface who looked at me with some sort of fear that I could not understand.

Perhaps he could read my expressionless face. I grabbed the axe from him and without aiming, I swung it at Wole. I don’t know how much force I had put in the swing but it was enough to have the ax sticking in his arm but not enough to chop the arm off at once. No sound came from him, he just passed out flat on the floor with the ax handle sticking out and another pool of blood quickly forming out.

I took a good look at him and then his brother before in walked away. I walked out to the uncompleted balcony and looked out. Funny I never noticed how close we were to the ocean, must be somewhere around lekki.

I had not paid attention on our trip down. But for one, I was grateful though, the air rushing from the waves of the ocean was just what I needed to stay sane or pretend to be sane. I did not notice when Obinna walked out to stand beside me.

“You love the girl gan o” was his first remark.

I sighed before I got around to replying him.

“Na my personal person. I didn’t love her, I could not love her. It was something more. You know person wey you fit do anything for” I tried to explain.

I don’t know if he got it or was just trying to understand where I was right now but he nodded.

“And you know the funny part of the matter?” I asked him

“Wetin?!”

“I never for one day fuck her. She and I don dey naked with each other plenty times, don sleep for each other bed but e just never happen” I chuckled at myself. It was surprising to even myself.

“Sometimes e dey happen like that. But the truth of the matter na say na those kind girls dey good to marry. Person wey una don know each other other inside out” He explained before passing me the joint again.

I thought about it from his angle for the first time and it dawned on me that if I had actually dated or married Eva, it was unlikely we were going to get into much fight or quarrel because we basically knew everything about one another.

Now these bastards have not just taken a friend from me, they had taken a potential wife. I finished up the joint just as a scream came from inside. Obinna left me and when inside.

I looked up at the sky, closed my eyes and said a short prayer, then I opened my eyes and went back inside.

I was no monster.
