Jim Parsons, ‘Garden State’ and ‘The Big Bang Theory’
The New York Times reported that Emmy Award-winning actor Jim Parsons is a gay man in 2012, backing up speculation that he had been in a serious relationship with a man for 10 years.
His character Sheldon Cooper on ‘The Big Bang Theory‘ is in a relationship with a woman, Amy Farrah Fowler, but he really is more asexual in nature. In the movie ‘Garden State,’ though, Parsons played the boyfriend of the main character’s mother.
Cynthia Nixon, ‘Sex and the City’
On ‘Sex and the City,’ Cynthia Nixon played Miranda Hobbes, who despite experimenting with lesbianism for one episode, eventually had a child with and married a man named Steve. In real life, though, Nixon identifies as bisexual, and has one child with her wife Christine Marinoni.
Matt Bomer, ‘White Collar’ and ‘Magic Mike’
Matt Bomer, who plays Neal Caffrey on ‘White Collar’ and showed off his dance moves alongside Channing Tatum in ‘Magic Mike,’ is in a relationship with a man named Simon Halls. The couple had three sons through a surrogate.
Sara Gilbert, ‘Roseanne’ and ‘The Big Bang Theory’
Sara Gilbert, who played heterosexual characters Darlene Conner-Healy on ‘Roseanne’ and Leslie Winkle on ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ came out as a lesbian in 2010. She has two children with her ex-partner of 10 years, Allison Adler, and she began dating musician Linda Perry after the split.
Jonathan Groff, ‘Glee’
On ‘Glee,’ Jonathan Groff played Jesse St. James, a young man from a rival show choir who conned his way into a romantic relationship with Lea Michele’s Rachel Berry. In an interview with Broadway.com, Groff described himself as “gay and proud.”

Zachary Quinto’s character in ‘What’s Your Number?’ stuck around just long enough for him to make the cut. He played Rick, the boyfriend of the leading lady who quickly broke up with her when she invited him to her sister’s wedding. In real life, Quinto officially came out as gay in 2011.

Jodie Foster has enjoyed a long, successful career in show business, playing many straight female characters along the way. In 2013, Foster officially came out as a lesbian during a speech at the Golden Globe Awards. She dated a woman named Cydney Bernard from 1993 to 2008.
Denis O’Hare, ‘Milk’ and ‘Sweet Charity’
Because Denis O’Hare is prone to playing despicable straight characters, many people aren’t aware that he is a homosexual off-screen. For example, he played Senator John Briggs in ‘Milk’ and Christina Applegate’s boyfriend in the Broadway production ‘Sweet Charity.’ O’Hare married a man named Hugo Redwood in July 2011.
Lily Tomlin, ‘Nashville’ and ‘Admission’
Legendary comedy actress Lily Tomlin has been public about her homosexual orientation since 2001, though she was never really secretive about it. She met her partner Jane Wagner in 1971, and the pair have been together ever since. She has played a large number of straight characters throughout her career, in movies such as ‘Nashville,’ ‘Big Business,’ and ‘Admission,’ to name just a few.

Did you know that Victor Garber is gay? It’s true! He talked about it publicly in 2012, but just like many homosexual celebrities, this fact was never really a secret. In 2013, he had been with his partner, Rainer Andreesen, for 13 years. On-screen, though, he has played a convincing straight man on many occasions, in movies like ‘Sleepless in Seattle,’ ‘The First Wives Club,’ ‘Legally Blonde,’ and ‘You Again.’ He also played Will Schuester’s father on ‘Glee.’
Heather Matarazzo, ‘Roseanne’
Heather Matarazzo, whom you may remember from movies like ‘The Princess Diaries’ and ‘Scream 3,’ has mostly played characters with unknown sexual orientations. On the hit series ‘Roseanne,’ however, she played the girlfriend of D.J. Conner in 1997. Matarazzo herself is an out lesbian.
Wanda Sykes, ‘Pootie Tang’
Comedian Wanda Sykes, who has appeared in movies such as ‘Monster-in-Law,’ ‘Evan Almighty,’ and ‘Licence to Wed,’came out as gay in 2008. She married her wife, Alex, earlier that year, and the couple has two children together. Sykes’ most notable performance as a straight character was in the 2001 comedy film ‘Pootie Tang,’ in which she played the title character’s love interest.
David Hyde Pierce, ‘Frasier’
David Hyde Pierce, who played the straight character Niles Crane on ‘Frasier’ from 1993 to 2004, came out as a gay man in 2007. He married his longtime partner, Brian Hargrove, on October 24, 2008.
Sarah Paulson, ‘Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip’ and ‘New Year’s Eve’
Sarah Paulson, who played the lesbian character Lana in ‘American Horror Story: Asylum,’ is actually a lesbian in real life. She hasn’t always played homosexual characters, though! On ‘Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,’ she played a devout Christian who dated multiple men on the show, and in the movie ‘New Year’s Eve,’ she played one half of a married couple who was struggling to give birth to the first baby in the new year.
Neil Patrick Harris, ‘How I Met Your Mother’
Lastly, just about everyone and their grandmother knows by now that Neil Patrick Harris is gay. He and his partner David Burtka have twins together through a surrogate, and he is very open about his sexuality. But his character Barney Stinson on ‘How I Met Your Mother’ is the polar opposite: a lying, cheating womanizer who eventually decided to settle down with one woman.
