When one looks at the rich and famous, you sort of imagine Hollywood to be this great big bubble you’re just born into at a certain age and it stays that way. It’s kind of hard to picture celebrities at a time before their fame, when they were just like regular (ok, not that regular) high school kids, taking classes, dating and hanging out with their best friends.
Whether they knew it at the time or not, the celebrities below all formed connections with another mini-celeb in the making, way before any of them made the big time.
1. Tobey Maguire & Leonardo DiCaprio
Tobey Maguire & Leonardo DiCaprio are life long pals, they met aged 13 after repeatedly bumping into each other at auditions and they remain extremely close today. Besides starring together in The Great Gatsby in 2013, Leo is godfather to Toby’s daughter, Ruby!
2. Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling
These two cuties met on The Mickey Mouse Club but it wasn’t only their kindred love for showbiz that cemented their life long friendship, for a time they were actually related! Well, not biologically of course, but as Gosling’s mother was working in Canada when he got the gig, JT’s mom stepped up and offered to be his legal guardian until his mother was able to relocate to Florida 6 months later.
3. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have been BFF’s since high school, both attending Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Massachusetts together. Their career break-through point came at exactly the same time for both actors, marked by their co-project, 1997 hit Good Will Hunting.
4. Elijah Wood and Macaulay Culkin
They met whilst appearing in The Good Son together in 1993 and although their paths have taken significantly different routes, they still stay in touch today.
5. Brad Pitt and Christina Applegate
Brad Pitt and Christina Applegate were a thing before anyone knew who either of them were. They met when they were 16 and dated for a while, that is, until Applegate ran off with another guy. Ouch!
6. Drew Barrymore and Courtney Love
It’s common knowledge that Drew Barrymore had a pretty intense party phase whilst growing up, so it’s no great surprise that her and Courtney Love got on like a house on fire. The pair met in a bathroom when Love was 19-years-old but despite the large age gap the pair became instant pals. Barrymore is even godmother to hers and Kurt Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean.
7. Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson
Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson have known each other since their time spent studying scriptwriting at University of Texas at Austin. They met during class one day and have remained friends ever since. Makes sense though right? Seeing as Wilson appears in pretty much all of Wes Anderson’s movies.
8. Kim Kardashian and Nicole Richie
We all know that Kim Kardashian was tight with Paris Hilton growing up, so it would only make sense that she was close with Hilton’s ex-partner in crime, Nicole Richie, too.
9. Sean Penn and Nicholas Cage
Penn and Cage have been friends way before either of them started hitting headlines, in fact their friendship dates way back to 1984 when the pair starred together in Racing with the Moon.
10. Cameron Diaz and Snoop Dogg
Cameron Diaz and Snoop Dogg may not have been best buds but their connection goes way back as this pair went to Long Beach Polytechnic High School together. According to Diaz, she even purchased some weed off him once!
“I’m pretty sure I bought weed from him. I was green even in high school!”
11. Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts
Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts have remained best buds since high school, something that Kidman holds dear to her heart.
“Naomi Watts and I are very, very good friends and have maintained that through so many things. I think that’s really rare, particularly for actresses, and I take a lot of pride in that.”
12. Kate Hudson and Liv Tyler
Thanks to their super famous parents, these girls have been friends since childhood and attended the Crossroads School for Arts & Science together in the ’90s. They went on to co-star in Dr. T & the Women where they basically pioneered that whole Cruel Intentions moment.
